Background on Be a Great Dad

The concept of Be a Great Dad had its roots in 1998 when a planning group in Calgary came together to develop a conference on Fatherhood.   Warren Redman chaired the planning group.

The main learning from the two Fatherhood Conferences, the subsequent workshops and the feedback from the dads brought Warren Redman to the simple conclusion that men do not need to be taught how to be fathers; rather what is needed is to give them permission to explore their own thoughts, feelings and experiences and to make their own personal discoveries.

In November 2005, Families Matter approached Warren Redman. The Calgary-based organization wanted to extend its work by including programs for fathers, and more significantly raising the profile of dads and demonstrating how valuable the role of fathers is in the development of the family. While a number of organizations have run workshops and programs for fathers, here was a family-centred agency willing to offer a proactive developmental program focused on fathers as part of the agency’s central theme. It was a bold move on their part. They had no funds for such an initiative, taking its budget from its other core programs in the hope that some money may be forthcoming at later stages.

The CD "Be a Great Dad, Building Your Legacy" was developed as another way for Father's to share their experiences and to connect with other Fathers.
